Mendel Art Gallery
This exhibition presents a new, poetic installation of mixed media works by well-known Canadian artist Patrick Traer. don’t tell me your dreams features themes around lost sleep, solitude, and darkness. This is the first solo exhibition for Traer at the Mendel Art Gallery since 1983. don’t tell me your dreams brings together ideas stemming from the artist’s diagnosis with sleep apnea in 2004, along with images and sounds related to what he calls a long-standing “anxious indifference” to listening to other people recount their dreams. It follows his ongoing concern, since the early 1990s, with the body’s fluidity, its incubation periods, biological obsolescence, and mythologies about human anatomy. don’t tell me your dreams is an exhibition in darkness, consisting of photographs, audio, drawing, and embroidery.
Aug 1 to Sept 13 Point/Counter-Point: Selections from the Permanent Collection
Mendel Art Gallery
This exhibition presents some of the most loved works in the Mendel Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection paired with some that have never before been shown. Mendel Chief Curator Dan Ring chose the works for the ways that they inform each other stylistically, through content, context, or shared emotion. The exhibition considers the ways that artists represent people and places, and create ideal worlds or darker visions of nightmare and doubt. Graeme Patterson’s 2006 animated film Monkey and Deer is paired with Alex Colville’s 1954 painting Visitors Are Invited to Register. Both works share the notion of a way station on a long journey with an uncertain ending. Two delicate fantastic porcelain figures by contemporary artist Shary Boyle are juxtaposed with exquisite watercolour on ivory portraits by pioneer artist Hilda J. Stewart, a portrait by Inglis Sheldon-Williams painted in 1917, and Stairs, from Canadian artist Michael Snow’s 1960 Walking Woman series. Lawren Harris’ Untitled (mountains near Jasper), c. 1934–40, is matched with Ernest Lindner’s Peeling Birches, 1965, David Alexander’s Vorticose Trees (Old Guard),1987 and Emily Carr’s Pine Forest, c. 1930.

Barn Playhouse, 25km North of Saskatoon (Yard opens @ 5:30pm)
Set in 1938, "Schoolhouse" is a delightfully funny and nostalgic play about the one room schoolhouses of the prairies. Melita Linton is 19 years old and has just finished her teacher's training. She has accepted a position at the SS #1 Jericho School where they have gone through six teachers already, and the year isn't even half over. Melita may not look much older than her students, but they soon realize she is not so easily dismissed. Melita's spirit and desire to teach cannot be daunted, even when the new boy arrives at school. Ewart is a foster child sent from the boys' training school and is twice her size. Everyone learns that grit, determination, a sense of humour and creativity are not determined by age or size!
